GoldBloom Feedback

James Worster(lead singer)

- Good use of our band’s music. I Really like how when the music starts, the video simultaneously changes to a fast motion one. Good how there is clips of us just hanging out as it shows the band as people instead of musicians. Being in fast forward means there is lots more material fitted into a smaller time frame. Relevant interview clips to do with the release of the album. The titles split the video up well.
How it will help us promote:
We can show it to people and they will hear our music, be able to see us and hear us talking about our music all in one video.

Harvey David (Bass Guitar)

The colour scheme of the website fits perfect with the art style of the band. The sun at the top of the page told me it was Goldbloom straight away. The layout of the website works really well as well, it’s so easy to access different information about the band such as our tour dates and videos of the our band live.

The video was really cool; it showed off our music and personality really effectively. I liked how the music still played while the interview took place; it really put us, as the band members with the music. The questions asked in the interview were great as well, most interviews just ask about tour dates and albums whereas the questions asked in this interview were more unconventional which made it more interesting to watch and be apart of. The questions weren’t just directed at one member of the band as well which allowed us to get a taste of each of them equally.

I think that the website could have a more interesting design, for example more art perhaps or more artistic layout.

Joe Spurrell(Drummer)

- I really think that the promotional video really shows off our fun, outgoing personalities as individual people/group of friends. I love the editing of the different atmospheres e.g. gig and rehearsals. I feel that the video expresses exactly what we want to express: Our love for music not image. Great music editing, and good use of dynamics.

- The Website looks really professional and is exactly our style. I love the logo of the sun, and it's also vert recognisable and rememberable. The golden sun contrasts really well with the simple black background.

- I would have liked to have seen more images on the website, and maybe some more footage of us as a band 'messing around'.

Audience Feedback on Promo video

After creating the 'first draft' of the promotional video, I needed some audience feedback. I created 10 questionnaires, 5 for GoldBloom's focus Group, and 5 for other range of ages.

From the samples of audience feedback I received very positive and encouraging responses. The band's target audience answered positively, receiving a high 9/10 for the video itself. Despite the younger half of the target audience not enjoying the aspects of the promo video as much,I still feel the band have targeted their audience successfully and they had a superb response during and after the screening. From the responses to the promotional video I am happy to say that the band have successfully targeted their audience and whilst having a very niche concept, a non-serious indie alternative band, they still have a broad appeal to not just their intentional audience of indie bands but to most teenage music fans of Rock, Indie, Pop and Alternative. I believe this broad appeal was due to the comedy, music andpersonal interactivity between the band members.

FINAL Goldbloom promo video

iMovie...
Is a proprietary video editing software application which allows Mac, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPad 2 users to edit their own home movies The user can edit the video clips, add titles, and add music. Effects include basic color correction and video enhancement tools, and transitions such as fade-in, fade-out, and slides. Using imovie was a step up from my AS foundation use of technology. Even after being involved with an imac specialist who came in to teach us more about imovie, I still felt that I was teaching myself a lot of the techniques along the way.
The opening is very much similar to "The Wombats" opening, with imovie I was able to create my vision of a landscape image, moving sideways to make it look like the camera is moving across the skyline image of Bristol. The typeface "WE PRESENT" is very simple so that the font does not seal away the attention to the background image. From using imovie I was able to play around with different styles for the font to 'enter' the image. I wanted the opening font to be quite dramatic to immediately grab the attention of the viewer. I decided upon using the 'Vertical Drift' effect as it created the dramatic opening without looking over the top!

I wanted to use original music from the band's album. I was lucky enough to be able to choose from a variety of songs, however I wanted the chosen song to have an upbeat pace to match the upbeat, lively persona's of the personalities of the band, conveying a positive image to potential fans and current fans. I chose the band's favorite song, 'Lavine Parine', which is also the album name. I felt that the song choice was also another great way to advertise the band. Good, catchy songs are a good way to promote the band as fans/people can memorise the songs, almost like a band's logo, I have used 'Lavine Parine' on the band's website so that people who watch the video, or look on their website can make a link asking themselves "Where have I heard that song before?"

I wanted the music to play the role of the narrator, for example the music immediately begins once the clip has begun, with a steady beat and guitar solo, almost like an introduction. The music then slows to a stop leaving an unexpected pause, leaving the viewer to think 'what is next to come?' I edited the music perfectly leaving the pause on the word"GOLDBLOOM" so that the audience can have time to acknowledge who the promo video is about. Using a loud drum beat enabled the clip to move onto the next scene, which is a good way of changing the mood and helps add pace and movement towards the next scene. The next scene contrasts from the first with the camera following the band around a house (to keep the casual, homely effect) The original clipping was too slow for a fast pace promo video, so with the ability on imovie I able to change the speed to however fast I wanted the clip to be, this again is a similar feature to 'The Wombat's' video. The 'following camera' is also playing the role of introducing the members of the band for the audience to acknowledge ‘who is who’ before the 'story' begins...

In the opening footage when Drummer ‘Joe’ is first seen, I have used an ‘Elliptical Shot’, this is when a shot can cut time out. For example the camera spots him, then turns to spot another member, then turns back round and joe has disappeared, we then follow his steps and find him in the kitchen, the camera has cut his journey time from the spot where he is noticed to the kitchen.
Imovie enabled me to fit the music into specific scenes that made the band look like they were singing/playing the background music of 'Lavine Parine' live, even though they are actually singing the song in the recording. For example when the camera zooms into James (lead singer) singing the lyrics to the slot of music that I edited in for that specific scene. I wanted the scenes to contrast from one another to add excitement and surprise for the viewer. This meant that I had to spend a long time editing the scenes. Similar to current promo videos I wanted the editing between scenes to be quick to create fast pace and excitement. For example quick changes between the focus zoom of lead singer to band playing live at a gig. I also wanted the audience to acknowledge both sides of the coin when seeing the band playing professionally and the band rehearsing and showing their personalties as individuals. This is also portrayed in the Mise en scene of both scenes. For example the mise en scene in the gig, is more professionally set out with Goldbloom’s logo of the sun hanging as the backdrop, whereas when the boys are rehearsing, the Mise en scene is very messy and releaxed.

Interviewing...
As previously mentioned, I wanted the majority of the promotional video to be based around an interview of the band, as I feel interviewing the band is promoting their album as well as the audience getting to the see the band as individuals. It was a concious decision to not just have music, however I was inspired by ‘Wombat’s promotional video, who also use the balance between a music promo and an interview.  Instead of following traditional music promo video conventions, I decided to break them, by merging music and interviewing into one video. As shown in my storyboarding I wanted a black background with white font written the question before the 'interviewer' asks the band, for example in the video the music would play over the question "Who are GoldBloom?" then the music would decrescendo allowing the band to answer the question. When editing I wanted the music to get louder/quieter, it was very difficult to find the balance of actually being able to hear the interview as well as the music playing quietly in the background. From the imac specialist I had learnt a imovie technique called 'Ducking' which reduces the volume of the backing track allowing the voice of the interviewer and band to be heard over the top. I used this technique fluently through the clip.

Including a merge between Music and interviewing the band, could be the start of the future for promotional videos. As before bands were sticking to traditional videos of the band pormoting themsleves sleves just playing the music, whereas, today's 'NEEDY' audience are wanting more information about the band themseleves for the audience to want to buy their music. This is where the interviewing style allows the audience to find out that NEEDED information that they wanted about the band.
I wanted the interview to be very casual and un-formal to match the persona’s that the band portray. The element of humour is conveyed mostly within the interviews when the band are jokingly interacting with each other, portraying personal jokes, and their fun charcters. Humour is also conveyed through the 'randomness' of subject conversation that is interacted between the female interviewer and the interaction between the band themselves. To link with the casual setting I wanted to include props of wine and bear bottles to convey the laid back, care-free approach that the band pursue. The subject conversation is very much about promoting the bands album, e.g. talking about the meaning of the band, who writes the songs, etc...

To add excitment and interest to the video, I have included editing techniques on moving one scene to the other in different styles. As the video itself has a vintage effect, I wanted to use simple but effective transitions. For example I have included ‘Fade to Black’ and ‘Cross Blur’. The cross blur transition linked well with the name of GoldBLOOM, creating a ‘bloom/blur’ effect. The blur effect also links well with an image of Goldbloom seen on their website, that I have purposely edited to be blurred. When filming the band on the sofa, I cleverly set the Mise en Scene background be a mirror, as I thought it would be a nice effect of zooming into one member talking, still able to see the reactions of the other band members through the mirror.

Mise En Scene...
As mentioned before the 'messy/casual' look of the Mise en scene can determine the Indie Genre of the band. I wanted the video footage of the bedroom to link with the GoldBloom photo shoot so that the audience can create a matched link. I feel that the Mise en scene of a music video can reflect the state of mind or personalities of the artist's/bands. For example The Mise en scene in GoldBlooms promotional video is very casual (on a sofa with bottles of wine/beer) when they are performing at their gig, they have created advertisement through their Mise en scene with a background image of their logo of the sun with "GB" written in master tape. When they are rehearsing in the 'messy' crowded bedroom, which reflects a messy, laid back, carelessness of the bands persona that they convey. The mise en scene at the beginning in a warm, homely kitchen links to 'Mumma Do the Hump' mise en scene, and also creates a REAL, friendliness to the band, for the audience to think "They are just normal people, like us!"
Effects...
As mentioned before I wanted to keep to the 'vintage' theme of a 'yellow' old fashioned tint. I also wanted to use this effect to link with the warm, friendliness connotations of the bands logo of the Golden Sun. To create the effect, with the ability of imovie I was able to create a'film grain' effect shown clearly in the opening of the video with the fainted animated black lines. Luckily enough I did not have to use effects on the footage as the footage itself was naturally like dark and old fashioned looking which is the look I wanted the convey. The footage of my promotional video is very similar to "Mumma do the Humps" theme, setting, footage and coloring. The Black background of the white font that separates the footage by asking the question links to the colour scheme of the Bands website. This conveys a good brand link between the different products promoting the band.
When the band are discussing what bands they are similar to, I decided to use the transition of the ‘Vertical Drift’ text effect with ‘NIRVANA and ‘RADIO HEAD’ against each other to convey that they are a merge of the two.

I have included paralinguistic elements which I was not able to understand let alone include in my foundation production. I didn’t realise until after I had completed the promotional video that the band had naturally created a non verbal way of communication through their music. For example at before the ‘interview’ begins, the band are conveying themselves as individuals as well as musicians without using speech. The video is also set in Bristol, which is a place that my target audience can easily relate to, which is another way of interactional qualities between the band and their audience. I have included a semiotic element not just in the promo video, but in all the products that I have created to promote the band. I have used an image of a ‘Golden Sun’ as a semiotic logo to represent the band, and a logo for the audience to symbolize the band with. The ‘Golden Sun’ is a positive, warming image that can also symbolize the wealth and success of the band through the golden connotation.

The Band...
I wanted the band to portray their REAL individual personalities as well as resembling themselves as a trio band. I noticed that naturally, the lead singer (james) was the dominant speaker out of the three, which matched his performative role of the the lead singer on stage. I noticed that the drummer (joe) was quite timid and quiet and seemed more shy than the other two, which again is a stereotypical image of drummers, set the back of the stage and are normally more shy.

Final Packaging

A Barcode is purely a unique number – there is no specific product information encoded within the bars. The barcode has no real meaning until the details of the product are entered into a retailer’s software application. When you supply your product to a retailer, they will input the product’s barcode number, description, cost price, sell price & reordering information into their software system. The use of barcode numbers is a voluntary system. Retailers use it as the basis for their pricing, inventory and ordering systems. It is becoming increasingly common for retailers, both large and small, to require all products they sell to display a unique product barcode for this purpose.

I have made these professional looking CD cover stickers as a creative aspect of making the 'made up' cover look real with a professional quality. However these types of stickers, "2 FOR £10 or £7 EACH" and "SPECIAL EDITION" are purposely placed on CD covers that have been released for a while, that need even more promotion or cheaper deals to sell.

Workshop with Media professionals

On WedMarch14 we participated in a four hour workshop, with suggestive advice on how to improve our advanced production. We had professional expertise from UWE lecturers specialising in Journalism. Myra Lee specialised in Broadcasting Journalism, and Phil Chamberlain who specialised in print. They gave each pupil one to one sessions on suggestive improvements and an outsiders feedback.

Improvement on Digi-Pak
- I mentioned that GoldBloom were an Indie band with a 'friendly grunge' genre. He thought that the album cover image of the cat contrasted with the 'friendly grunge' genre and didn't resemble the band, as 'cats' symbolise calm, timid animals, however I challenged his opinion and mentioned that cats can be sly and can tease people, which I wanted the album cover to do to potential buyers. Also I mentioned that current album covers today do not resemble what the band are like, the design of the album cover could be completely different to the genre of the band themselves.

Improvements on Promotional Video
- Myra complimented on the use of original music and good use of narration through music.

- She suggested that I include more 'close up' footage to convey the bands facial intensity, and close up of the band playing the instruments, e.g. 'fingers strumming on guitar'.

- She found that the 'interview based' style was too repetitive, so suggested that I either edit out the text, or edit out my voice repeating what the text had written, however I challenged her opinion and mentioned that I wanted to keep the text as it broke up, and contrasted nicely against the real footage.

-Explain in my blog why I have chosen to have joe saying "I literally have nothing to say to that" as it conveys his personality of being a little shy and quiet from the dominate speakers of the other band members, (talk about how drummers are normally more quiet than the others)

- Get rid of "BUY NOW" to forceful, if a consumer wanted to buy it that will be there decisions do not force feed!

- Suggested comment that I have the band names 'NIRVANA' and 'RADIOHEAD' merging together on top of footage as they are bands that the GoldBloom resemble themselves as being similar to.

Final Outcome of Front and Back of CD cover

Still using 'try out's' on the CD prototype, I kept with my initial design idea's for the front and back of the CD cover. Again I needed audience feedback on the outcome, as one person's view could be totally different to a group's view. Similarly I stuck with showing the mock up to GoldBloom and their focus group.

The band specifically loved the album front cover, they liked the randomness of the image of the multicoloured, slightly blurred CAT, as the random image matched their random, crazy persona's as a band. They thought that the colours were striking and and combined well within the image. The liked the fact that it was THEIR handwriting used on the back cover, as it created a sense of originality and link within the band itself, almost like their signature on the back, promoting that THEY wrote the songs. They liked liked the edited colours, and random shiny patches along with the vignette effect created around the section.

The targeted audience of 'young teens' also thought that the front cover stood out and was eye catching if they were to walk past the CD in a shop, however they thought that they typeface of the album cover could have been made slightly larger, however others argued that they liked the subtle small black font. They loved the colour scheme of Blues, purples, red and white, they all merged well together. They extremely liked the simplicity and originality of the back cover, as it created a personal attachment as if the band had proved to the audience that they wrote the songs, also seemed like a personal signature that the band had signed for their fans, again another way or creating a relationship between the band and their fans.

CD Mock up

Like all products, I needed to create a PROTOTYPE of the CD so that I could test out different images in each section to see which outcome worked the best. This image on the left was my first initial idea for the interior of the cover. I asked GoldBloom, and a few of their focus group of what they thought of this design, and their feedback was good, but not good enough to satisfy me, that this was a striking, 'PICK ME UP AND BUY ME' album cover, it needed MORE!
The criticism that I received was that the typeface written in the centre of the Golden sun logo was too small, and the colour of the font did not stand out enough. The two images contrasted too much and did not really link, there were too many different images on each section which made the album look OVER done and complicated.

After the audience feedback that I had received I decided that I needed to use less images to keep the subtle, but striking appearance to attract viewers to buy the album when put on shelves. After inspiration from researching interior of current album covers, I came across a clever idea of using one long landscape image used on both sections of the inside design.

I decided to experiment on the mock up template of the large image of the band, and cropping it through the middle to create two separate image that would look like a long landscape image of the original picture used on the interior of the album cover. I was able to crop the photo perfectly leaving the arm of the middle member of the band on the right image to show that the image was a full picture before the editing created on 'iphoto'.

The outcome was a huge success! It was extremely difficult creating the right fit for the section, as I had to print several images off to find the best fit. Like before I showed this second trial mock up to GoldBloom and their focus group, and they both thought that the idea was really original and even looked sophisticated and smart, including looking very professional.

Final GoldBloom Website

http://www.wix.com/kraziekat_1/final-website-of-goldbloom

Naturally the eye prefers a centred image and bold title, as the title and logo are what people remember mostly and it is the band's signature image and name. From developed experience using 'Photoshop' in my AS project, I was able to freely use my editing knowledge to create a logo for GoldBloom. The band have used a 'Golden Sun' to symbolise their 'Band logo', I wanted to stick with this logo and place the sun in the top centre of all the pages on the website. However the image I had chosen on 'Google' had a white background behind the image, which I wanted to erase so that the Golden Sun contrasted with the sophisticated plain black background of the website.

Using my Creativity skills developed from 'PhotoShop', I was able to achieve the look I wanted.Creative ideas can be inspired from other sources. My website design consists of a black background with a contrasting 'Gold' logo, this idea had been inspired from the popular, current music band,'Mumford & Sons' website. As well as using Creative skills in the design and colour choice, you have to also consider the design of your 'Navigation' access. If you want fans and the music business to truly dig into your site, you must make it easy for them to move from page to page. After researching current websites, I have acknowledged that the 'Navigation Bar' usually sits along the top of every page listing the main sections of your site. I wanted to keep creative by making the chosen link light up 'yellow' to to match the Golden Sun, when the mouse hovers over it, this is also including interactivity. Keeping a good colour coordination is pleasing to the eye, and also makes a website look professional. Keeping the list of internal links short and snappy, 'Home, News, Live, Band, Blog, Video' this makes it easier for people to access what they want to know about the band quicker. When creating a website you have to consider all ages and gender of people who are likely to access the site. One way to get people involvedwith the band's music is to give them something to do while they are on your site. By creating an interactive element, for example on my 'Blog' page, I have written a blog from the band to their supporters a 'Post Poll' allowing them to feel involved and participate in contacting the band.

When researching current male music band websites, I found that when I clicked onto the website the link, there was no immediate sound, e.g. track of one of their songs. I found that when I came to the second/thrid page, there would be access for the viewer to click and listen to a variety of tracks from the bands album. I thought this was a good way to promote interactivty, as the viewer had the choice to click and listen. Personally as an outside viewer, I feel that on some music websites, for example, "Florence and the Machine", having music play straight away, was almost forcing the viewer to listen, as a way of forcing them to buy the song/album. As in today's society, the mediated world has become 'Power to the People', therefore I feel that the viewer would like to have control whether they want to listen or not. I have included this interactive element, by creating two of the main tracks from GoldBloom's album, 'Lavine Parine', I have created an animated button ON/OFF, as an easy access for the viewer to see and click. By only conveying two of the songs from the album, is almost teasing the viewer, by saying if you want to listen to more, buy the album, which is promoted for the viewer to buy on each page of the site.

FACEBOOK LINK

In the bottomright of every page on the website I have created an interactive 'FACEBOOK LIKE' button. This is to purposely invite MORE peopleto check out GoldBloom website, the more fans the more chance of success!

QR CODE
Is a form of barcode that can hold much more data than the traditional version, including links to videos and websites. QR codes have been around since the 1990s but have become increasingly popular in the UK in the last year or two because smartphones such as the iPhone are able to read them. I have included the code on the bottom right on each page on the website next to the Facebook like button. This again is finding another way to interact with the digitalised audience, and also a way to get even more new fans through this new source of technology.

HOME PAGE:

I have learnt that you specifically have to acknowledge that the home page is the 'welcome mat' of any website. Having the freedom to be however creative as you want can sometimes overrule the 'simplicity' of a website. I have considered this aspect, and have created a sophisticated, symmetrically pleasing to the eye layout that is not toographic heavy, this is why I changed from my first idea of creating a 'cluttered' image dominating website, as I wanted to go for the 'Less is more' effect. I have included an animated slideshow of a few images of the band on the homepage to add animation andinteractivity to the site. A music website can look attractive without overwhelming a visitor's eye and their web browsers ability to render pages. Creativity ability plays to the fact that you have to be aware of not over crowding a page on the site. Too much information too soon may chase people/fans away, or could easily bore them, loosing fans and the ability to sell your music. I have acknowledged this, by creating small rectangular boxes which include 'News updates of the band', 'Recent Album releases' in small detail to draw fans in on the homepage to want to carry on looking through the site to find out more. The secret is to suede people in with the creative design, layout, images, and persuasive text on the homepage.

NEWS PAGE:

I felt that having a news page was vital in today's 'Power to the People' media orientated society. People/Fans LOVE to get involved and express their views, opinions and suggested improvements, and what better way than expressing it online for others to see and agree/disagree. By allowing a'Comments' page it helps the band understand what their fans like to hear and what they wantto hear. This is a great selling point as at the end of the day the band are making music FOR their fans, so it's a great way for bands to know what their audience want. On the page I have creates small semeiotic symbols of the Twitter and Facebook symbols, for example the "t" and bird sign is for Twitter, and the "f" is for Facebook. I decided that these symbols were important as Facebook and Twitter are the most popular social networking sites, so having it on the site is good advertising and also expands more people to link onto the site.

LIVE PAGE:

Having a LIVE page is vital for important information about the band's tour dates of when they are playing and where! I have created a rounded box with information of when and where GoldBloom are performing. Beside the information box I have included 'vintage' sepia toned real images of band playing at one of their gigs. I have set the images within a 'camera tape' setting just to create the 'vintage' effect. On the right hand side of the page, I have included a POSTER of the band, which like I have mentioned before is a great way to advertise the band and where they are next playing. Below the poster I have attached audio sounds of two of the Bands songs, this is almost like a 'teaser' for the audience as they can interact by playing the music, to hear a teaser of what the songs played at the gig will be like. Including teaser audio clips is good advertising of the bands music, but also good advertising of selling gig tickets!

BLOG PAGE:

FANS NEEDMORE THAN JUST MUSIC! These days for fans to buy the bands music they want to know more about the band as individuals as well as musicians! This is where a BLOG is also vital to include on a website. The Blog is written by one of the bandmembers, addressing their fans as friends, "Dear Friends..." - this itself is pushing the barrier between the band and their fans, creating an even more personal relationship, so the fans feel special that they are addressed as 'FRIENDS' of the band. As well as creating a closer relationship with their fans, they are also cleverly advertising their new album release by answering questions that fans have asked about their album. By having a blog allows the band member, Harvey to be himself through his online language, for example (sorry y'all) This is almost like his ideolect, again another way for fans to get to know the members as individuals. I have created a 'COMMENTS' column, an interactive way for fans to participate by 'TALKING' to the band expressing their opinions, and suggestive improvements for the band to acknowledge.

BAND PAGE:

By having a 'BAND PAGE' is for the band members to give the viewers a background information of the band themselves. Potentially for NEW viewers who want to find out more about how the band got together. The page consists of a large image of the band, which I had edited to a sepia vintage effect to link with the Golden Sun logo, and also blurred the image to link with the 'BLOOM' effect. Under the image I have created a 'scroll box' with personal information about wherethe band came from, how they became a band, and a biography of how the bands interact with each other as friends as well as musicians. Also includes comments from the band.

VIDEOPAGE:

The lastpage consists of the PROMOTIONAL VIDEO of Goldbloom, I created the video on the last page, purposely to create a memorable advertisement and summary of everything that the website pages consisted of, basically the video is the evaluation of GoldBloom. I decided to create another 'COMMENTS' box for fans to comment on about the band, and why they like/dislike them, again another way for the audience to interact with the band.
